Something Necessary is an intimate moment in the life of Anne, a woman struggling to rebuild her life after the civil unrest that swept Kenya after the 2008 election. This is the latest production from the One Fine Day Films production company.

Previous successful projects include ‘Soul Boy‘ (2010) and Kenya’s first Academy Award (Oscars) entry ‘Nairobi Half-Life‘ (2012). We have featured ‘Nairobi Half-Life’ here. One Fine Day is headed by Marie Steinmann and Tom Tykwer (Cloud Atlas, Run Lola Run).

The Distant Boat is a feature-length drama with an aim to stir the heart of the African church toward greater involvement in missions. It  tells the fictional story of Max, a young urban Kenyan who has it all: a dream job, a best friend, and a girl he hopes to marry. In the midst of a crisis, Max is befriended by a poor Muslim fisherman named Yousef— an encounter that radically changes his life and perspective.

This is Kenya’s first entry for the Foreign Film category at the Oscars.

A brief synopsis:

A young aspiring actor (played brilliantly by Joseph K. Wairimu) from upcountry Kenya dreams of becoming an accomplished actor one day, and in pursuit of this and the chagrin of his brother and parents, he makes his way to Nairobi the city of opportunity. He quickly understands why Nairobi is nicknamed Nairrobery as he is robbed of all his money and belongings and left alone in a city where he doesn’t know a soul.
